Nigerians in Diaspora Decry Emergency Rule in Rivers

By: Nkechi Okechukwu

The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE) has strongly condemned the recent imposition of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The group described the move as unconstitutional and damaging to Nigeria’s democratic reputation.

In a statement issued by its Global President, Dr. Philip Fola, ANPE expressed deep concern over the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials. ANPE argued that the imposition of emergency rule signals a dangerous shift toward authoritarianism, undermining the principles of federalism and due process enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

The group noted that Nigeria, once hailed as a beacon of democracy in Africa, is now facing growing criticisms. “The suspension of elected officials without due process is a clear violation of democratic norms,” the statement read.

Nigeria’s reputation as a stable investment destination is at stake. This arbitrary abrogation of constitutional procedures erodes trust in Nigeria’s dedication to democratic values, which discourages potential investors. ANPE warned that such actions could erode investors’ confidence and further destabilize the nation’s fragile economy.

The group emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution delineates the processes for addressing grievances against elected officials, none of which is the unilateral imposition of a state of emergency by the federal government. By ignoring this legal procedure, the President not only set a dangerous precedent but also signaled a disregard for the principles of federalism.

This authoritarian maneuver has drawn criticism from international observers, destroying Nigeria’s status as an investment destination. “It is a thing of disappointment that our beloved country, which was once praised as a beacon of democracy in Africa, is gradually being perceived by international communities as a nation that is failing in its democratic ideals,” the group said.

Many international bodies and foreign governments have expressed disapproving concerns over the erosion of democratic norms in Nigeria. This perception has been further exacerbated by the actions of President Tinubu, as an emergent dictator in the international circuit. Such descriptions, whether accurate or hyperbolic, have had a chilling effect on Nigeria’s global standing, tarnishing its reputation as a stable and democratic investment destination.

The statement further accused the National Assembly of failing in its duty to check executive overreach, calling on lawmakers to investigate the constitutionality of the emergency rule in Rivers State. ANPE also urged the judiciary to uphold the rule of law by ensuring that constitutional procedures are followed in addressing political crises.

Furthermore, the Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE) is deeply troubled by the decision made by some of the key stakeholders in the face of this constitutional crisis. It is unfortunate that the National Assembly, which is tasked with checking executive excesses and upholding the Constitution, has become a disappointment in executing its role as a bulwark against authoritarianism.

Their support for this blatant violation of constitutional norms is a disgrace to Nigerians in the diaspora. We call on the National Assembly to reinvestigate this matter thoroughly and to take appropriate action to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy. We also call on the judiciary to adjudicate on the constitutionality of the state of emergency and to ensure that the rule of law prevails.

Emphasizing the economic implications of political instability, ANPE warned that foreign investors may withdraw or withhold investments due to uncertainty about Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance. While calling for immediate reconciliation and dialogue, ANPE urged the federal government to respect state autonomy and democratic institutions.

The strength of our nation lies in our unity and commitment to democracy. President Tinubu must rectify this aberration to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic integrity and economic viability.

NNPCL’s ‘Dollars for Crude’ Policy Triggers Fierce Backlash

By Sandra Ukeredi

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) is facing intense criticism for its recent ‘Dollars for Crude’ policy, which has been condemned by the Centre for Energy Development and Economic Sustainability (CEDES) as a deliberate attempt to cripple local refineries and sustain Nigeria’s dependence on fuel imports ¹.

Dr. Umar Sani, Executive Director of CEDES, accused the NNPCL of prioritizing foreign exchange gains over the survival of local refiners. The Naira-for-Crude arrangement had ensured steady crude supply to Nigerian refineries, saved the government huge amounts in foreign exchange, and allowed for reinvestment in critical infrastructure ¹.

The controversy surrounding the policy has sparked concerns among petroleum marketers, who have started adjusting pump prices accordingly. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) warned that marketers might begin selling petrol in US dollars if Dangote Refinery insists on foreign currency transactions ¹.

This could lead to higher fuel prices, petrol scarcity, worsening inflation, and further hardship for Nigerians. CEDES warned that the NNPCL’s latest move could have severe consequences for the Nigerian economy and called on the federal government to immediately reverse the policy and uphold the Naira-for-Crude system to support local refining and economic stability ¹.

The decision to stop the naira-based crude supply might lead to volatility in the foreign exchange (FX) market, thereby eroding recent gains, according to market analysts. This could further exacerbate the economic challenges facing Nigeria ¹.

In October 2024, the federal executive council (FEC) approved the allocation of 450,000 barrels of crude intended for domestic consumption to be sold in naira to Nigerian refineries, with the Dangote refinery serving as a pilot project. However, the national oil firm has been accused of consistently failing to meet the allocation ¹.

The Dangote refinery has expressed concerns over the NNPC’s inability to supply adequate crude oil. Edwin Devakumar, the vice-president of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), described the NNPC’s supply as “peanuts” ¹.

The controversy surrounding the ‘Dollars for Crude’ policy has highlighted the need for a sustainable and stable energy policy in Nigeria. The federal government must carefully consider the implications of this policy and take decisive action to support local refineries and economic stability.

The NNPCL’s move has also raised concerns about the potential impact on the Nigerian economy, particularly in terms of inflation and foreign exchange volatility. As the situation unfolds, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how the government responds to the crisis.

In the meantime, petroleum marketers are bracing themselves for the potential consequences of the policy change. The IPMAN has warned that the move could lead to a shortage of petroleum products, which would have a devastating impact on the economy.

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: the NNPCL’s ‘Dollars for Crude’ policy has sparked a fierce backlash, and the government must act quickly to address the concerns of stakeholders and mitigate the potential damage to the economy.

South East Group Defends Nigeria’s Electoral Commission Against  Campaign of Calumny

By Nnamdi Agu

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo sociocultural organization, has condemned recent allegations against Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The organization described the allegations as malicious and unfounded, urging all stakeholders to support Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, emphasized that INEC’s credibility and neutrality have improved significantly, making it essential for all stakeholders to support the commission. He noted that the allegations are a deliberate fabrication designed to incite chaos and destabilize the electoral landscape.

Isiguzoro also expressed concern over reports of clandestine plans by unprincipled politicians to exploit the ongoing political crisis between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. He stated that such maneuvers are designed to orchestrate chaos and manipulate the public narrative surrounding Professor Yakubu and his pivotal role at INEC.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for improvements in INEC’s independence, credibility, and transparency. The organization believes that Professor Yakubu’s initiatives to reshape INEC for efficient electoral reform should not be undermined by orchestrated, faceless groups.

Isiguzoro emphasized the importance of supporting Professor Yakubu and his dedicated team at INEC. He called upon all Nigerians, regardless of partisan affiliation, to rise in defense of the country’s institutions, denounce falsehoods, and ensure that INEC’s integrity remains sacrosanct.

In a related development, Ohanaeze Ndigbo had previously cautioned INEC against losing the confidence of Nigerian voters, urging the commission to ensure credible elections ¹.

Stop Peddling Falsehood Against INEC Over Proposed Akpoti-Uduaghan Recall- Apex South East Socio-cultural Group Warns

..

The Apex Igbo Sociocultural Organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has unequivocally condemn what it described as malicious and unfounded allegations made against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly under the astute leadership of Professor Mahmoud Yakubu.

We assert, with the utmost conviction, that the credibility and neutrality of INEC have positively improved in recent times, making it imperative for all stakeholders to rally in support of our democratic institutions.

According to Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro
Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in a statement issued and made available to newsmen, the recent spate of allegations claiming corruption within INEC is nothing short of a deliberate fabrication designed to incite chaos and destabilize the electoral landscape. It is a calculated attack aimed at undermining the integrity of a commission that is vital to the functioning of democracy in Nigeria.

“We categorically label these charges as malicious falsehoods peddled by the anti-democratic group known as the South-South Alliance—an organization evidently manipulated and funded by unscrupulous politicians whose sole aim is to erode public trust in INEC.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo denounces this campaign of calumny, which we identify as the treacherous handiwork of fifth columnists seeking to disrupt the democratic process. We implore INEC to dismiss these baseless accusations as the distractions they are, intentionally devised to draw attention away from their critical responsibilities. It is essential that we safeguard the integrity of INEC at all costs, as it represents the cornerstone of our nation’s electoral democracy.

“Moreover, the Nigerian populace is acutely aware of the unfolding political drama surrounding the proposed recall of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. It is profoundly undemocratic for shadowy figures and obscure factions to create artificial panic through spurious allegations against INEC”.

Isiguzoro averred that such actions, if not curtailed, pose a significant risk of inciting violence that could culminate in the destruction of INEC offices and threaten the safety of its officials across the nation.

He said, particularly troubling are the reports of clandestine plans by unprincipled politicians to exploit the ongoing political crisis between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, stressing that such maneuvers are designed to orchestrate chaos and to manipulate the public narrative surrounding Professor Yakubu and his pivotal role at INEC.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo stands steadfast at the forefront of advocating for improvements in INEC’s independence, credibility, and transparency. We believe that the commendable initiatives undertaken by Professor Yakubu to reshape INEC for efficient electoral reform and to enhance its constitutional role as an unbiased national electoral umpire should not be undermined by orchestrated, faceless groups. It is our collective duty to support those endeavors rather than allow them to be derailed by malicious intent.

“As a critical stakeholder in Nigeria’s democratic project, Ohanaeze Ndigbo affirms its commitment to partnering with Professor Yakubu and his dedicated team at INEC. Together, we must fortify our democracy against the relentless onslaught of anti-democratic forces”.

He called upon all Nigerians regardless of partisan affiliation to rise in defense of our institutions, to denounce falsehoods wherever they are propagated, and to ensure that the integrity of our electoral commission remains sacrosanct. “Let us unite in our shared commitment to uphold the democratic principles that bind us as a nation” he stated.

In a statement on Monday, March 24, 2025, the lawmaker described the claims as “false and misleading,” reaffirming her stance on the issue that resulted in her six-month suspension.

“The purported reports circulating that I have apologized to the Senate and retracted my position are completely untrue. I stand firmly by my words and actions, and I have not issued any apology to the Senate or anyone regarding this matter,” Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stated.

Corruption Scandal: How Dalung’s $135,000 IAAF Misappropriated Funds was cleared by Fmr. Sports Minister, Dare

Such characters Don’t Moral right to Attack Tinubu

Arewa Progressives Elders Forum(APEF) took a swipe at  the Former Youths and Sports Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung for failing to settle the overpayment of 135 thousand Dollars made to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) during his days as Minister.

According to the Forum, the failure to pay the funds erroneously credited into account of Athletics Federation of Nigeria,no doubt dented the country’s image .

The IAAF in 2017 erroneously sent $150,000 to the AFN instead of the annual $15,000 it usually gives to its affiliates. And subsequently on May 13, 2018 wrote to AFN asking for a refund when it discovered that the whereabouts of the excess could not be traced.

However, the then Minister of Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung who acknowledged receipt of the funds failed to refund until he left office in 2019 .

In a press statement made available to journalists in Kaduna today, the Forum described Dalung as a “Political Misfit” who brought shame to his country.

The statement signed by the Chairman Mal. Mustapha Jalingo, said, ” It’s unfortunate that same Dalung that damage Nigeria’s reputation with such despicable financial scandal could come out to accuse Tinubu of making a historic mistake by worsening economic hardship in the North.”

While stating that the likes of Dalung should be languishing in prison for misappropriating public funds and act of  corruption, the Elders Forum noted,”He who must come to equity must come with clean hands. We are pretty sure it was that act of National disgrace that informed President Muhammadu Buhari decision to drop him as a minister.”

The group however, commended his successor ,the former Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Sunday Dare, who later  approved the refund of the $135,000  IAAF Misappropriated Funds.

Meanwhile, the Forum  which said it’s not to late to take legal action against Dalung ,urged the relevant anti graft agencies to immediately arrested and prosecuted him for bringing shame to the country .

Arewa Youth Leader Offers Condolences to Zelani, Underscoring Inter-community Harmony

By Suleiman Abbah
In a poignant gesture of solidarity, the president of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Yerima Shetima, recently extended his condolences to Yusuf Zelani, the former Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, following the death of his stepmother, Hajiya Fatima. This visit, while rooted in personal loss, serves as a significant reminder of the interconnectedness of community, leadership, and the collective responsibility to support one another during times of grief. It also highlights the ongoing dialogue about governance and societal progress in Northern Nigeria.
Shetima’s visit underscores the importance of community support in times of mourning. By reaching out to Zelani, he not only expresses empathy but also reinforces the bonds that tie leaders and their constituents together. In a region often beset by challenges, such gestures are vital in fostering unity and resilience. Zelani’s acknowledgment of his stepmother’s passing as “an act of God” reflects a broader cultural understanding of life, death, and the inevitability of fate, reminding us that while loss is personal, it is also a shared experience that can bring communities closer.
Furthermore, Shetima used the occasion to commend the government for its recent efforts in improving the nation’s economy. His assertion that “we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel” is both a hopeful and realistic perspective on the current state of affairs in Nigeria. The acknowledgment of the government’s strides in enhancing security and food supply is crucial, especially in a region that has faced significant socio-economic challenges. By recognizing these efforts, Shetima encourages a spirit of patience and support for the government, suggesting that collective perseverance is necessary for achieving long-term stability and growth.
The call for patience and continued support for the government is particularly relevant in today’s political climate. As Shetima notes, the initial complaints and frustrations experienced by the populace are understandable, but they must be balanced with an acknowledgment of the positive changes taking place. This duality of criticism and commendation is essential for a healthy democratic process, wherein leaders are held accountable while also being encouraged to continue their development efforts.
Shetima’s remarks about the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum’s commitment to holding leaders accountable resonate deeply within the context of Northern Nigeria’s challenges. By commending President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani for their development initiatives, Shetima emphasizes the importance of leadership that is responsive to the needs of its people. The challenges facing Northern Nigeria are multifaceted, and it is imperative that leaders not only address these issues but also engage with the youth, who represent the future of the region.
Zelani’s expression of gratitude for Shetima’s visit reinforces the notion that leadership is not solely about governance but also about community engagement and personal connections. His reflection on being part of the larger AYCF, even when not physically present at meetings, speaks to the shared responsibility that all members of society have in supporting one another. This sentiment is vital for fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration, which is essential for overcoming the socio-political obstacles facing Northern Nigeria.
The condolence visit by Yerima Shetima to Yusuf Zelani encapsulates the essence of community solidarity in the face of personal loss. It serves as a reminder that leadership is not just about political power but also about empathy, accountability, and the collective journey towards progress. As Nigeria navigates its path towards improvement, it is crucial for leaders and citizens alike to remain patient, supportive, and engaged in the ongoing dialogue about development and governance. Through such collaborative efforts, there is hope for a brighter future for Northern Nigeria, one where unity and resilience prevail.

Kogi Group Uncovers Plan To Silence Natasha Using Faceless Constituents For Recall

A desperate plan to compile faceless names from Kogi State purportedly seeking for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan representing Kogi Central in the Nigerian Senate has been uncovered.

The plan, according to Kogi Central based pressure group on the platform of Action Collective, made the revelation public on Wednesday.

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is presently serving six months suspension slammed on her over the sexual harassment allegation against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, signed by its coordinator, Dr. Onimisi Ibrahim, said intelligence also revealed that allies of those fighting Senator Natasha in the Nigerian Senate are behind the plot.

According to the group, findings revealed that the latest move is considered by Senator Natasha’s traducers as ‘nailing the coffin’ to prevent her from seeking justice which she is currently pursuing both here in Nigeria and from the international community.

“We gathered reliably that a former governor in Kogi state has been contacted to carry out this evil plan. We also have an information that some ally INEC staff have also been recruited to commence the recall of Senator Natasha.

“This project which is said to gulped over two million dollars, will involve the recruitment of faceless persons from the various local government areas in Kogi State who would be paid to append false signatures on the purported recall paper,” the group alleged.

The statement also alleged that some highly placed staff of INEC have been paid huge sums of money to carry out and endorse the plan, adding,”that is why it is important to alert the public especially the civil society and Human Rights Activists including the Media, who are the watchdog of the society as well as the security agencies to remain vigilant and subject such documents regarding the planned recall to proper scrutining. A stitch in time saves nine!.”
